Melissa Hortman was an American politician who served as Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2019 to January 2025. A member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), she represented District 34B in the northern Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Born Melissa Anne Haluptzok on May 27, 1970, in Fridley, Minnesota, she graduated from Blaine High School in 1988. Her academic pursuits led her to Boston University, where she earned bachelor's degrees in political science and philosophy in 1991. She then went on to receive a Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1995, and a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School in 2018.
Hortman was married to Mark Hortman. Together, they had two children, Colin and Sophie. Her family was a part of her life in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
Before her career in the legislature, Hortman worked as an attorney. She had her own law practice specializing in housing law and consumer rights, and also served as an assistant county attorney for Hennepin County. She also worked for her family's used auto parts company.
Melissa Hortman passed away on June 14, 2025, at the age of 55.
