Caitlin Clark suffers apparent injury late in Fever win over Sun: Score, highlights

Caitlin Clark's Injury Scare Mars Fever's Hard-Fought Win Over Sun

The Indiana Fever secured a crucial 85-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday, extending their winning streak to three games. However, the celebratory mood was significantly dampened in the final minute as superstar guard Caitlin Clark exited the game with an apparent right groin injury, leaving fans and the Fever organization holding their breath.

With just under 40 seconds left in the hard-fought contest, Clark delivered a sharp bounce pass to Kelsey Mitchell for a layup, but immediately after the play, she clutched the inside of her right thigh. Visibly distressed, she walked gingerly toward the opposing basket, resting her head against the stanchion before making her way to the bench, where she appeared to be holding back tears and covered her face with a towel. She did not return to the game.

Fever Head Coach Stephanie White offered a cautious update post-game, stating, "She just felt a little something in her groin, so we'll get it evaluated and see what happens from there." This latest incident raises significant concern, as Clark had only recently returned to action last week after missing five games due to a left groin injury. This marks her fourth leg injury of the season, having also dealt with a left quad strain earlier in the year.

Despite the injury scare, Clark still contributed 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists in the win, even though she struggled with her shooting, going 4-of-14 from the field and 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. Her fourth-quarter surge, where she scored nine consecutive points, was instrumental in helping the Fever pull away from a resilient Sun team. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 20 points, while Natasha Howard added a strong double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

The timing of this injury is particularly unfortunate, with the WNBA All-Star weekend just days away. Clark was not only voted an All-Star captain but was also scheduled to participate in the 3-point contest on Friday and start in Saturday's All-Star Game. Her availability for these highly anticipated events is now in serious jeopardy, casting a shadow over what was otherwise a pivotal win for the surging Fever. The team is set to face the New York Liberty in a back-to-back, and Clark's status for that contest, and beyond, remains uncertain pending further evaluation.
