A preliminary report released by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) indicates that the fuel supply to the engines of an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner was cut off just seconds after the plane took off from Ahmedabad last month, leading to a crash that killed 260 people. The report, issued early Saturday morning (local time), provides crucial initial insights into the world's deadliest aviation accident in a decade, though it does not assign blame or offer a definitive conclusion

According to the report, the fuel control switches for both Engine 1 and Engine 2 transitioned from the "RUN" to the "CUTOFF" position within a one-second interval, almost immediately after the aircraft lifted off. This action starved the engines of fuel, causing them to rapidly lose thrust.

Chillingly, the cockpit voice recorder captured a conversation between the pilots where one is heard asking the other why the fuel was cut off, to which the other pilot responded that they did not do so. The report does not specify which pilot made which remark, nor which pilot transmitted a "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" call just before the crash.

Aviation safety experts note that these fuel switches are designed not to be moved accidentally, requiring a two-step process to shift them from "RUN" to "CUTOFF."
